How we make wall beds for Surrey Canal

Studio flats benefit more than most from a bed that folds away. By day, the room is a living space; at night, the bed comes down. Storage and shelving can go on either side or above to make the most of the wall. Typical reasons to get in touch are a home office that also sleeps guests and a bed that looks like cupboards by day; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Many homes around Surrey Canal have been built since 2000, and in newer homes, bedrooms tend to be compact, with plasterboard stud walls. Heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor, rather than relying on the board alone. Where a small built-in cupboard came with the home, it can be reworked as part of the design.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

How fitting works for wall beds

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so we protect the route before carrying anything in. Door frames and corners get covers too. The sections are assembled in the room.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wall bed and any storage.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
  6. We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

Bedroom storage in Surrey Canal

In the area around Surrey Canal, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 37%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 34%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Surrey Canal, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. About 13% of homes around Surrey Canal were built before 1919, well below the figure for Lewisham as a whole, about 36%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. So the walls behind wall beds here are more likely to be later brick, block or plasterboard, and they’re checked during the design visit.

Living in a block of flats near South Bermondsey station? Then wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Deptford Park, wall beds are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Practical tips

People planning wall beds often ask about these. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Decide who the bed is mainly for
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Let us know what the wall is made of if you know
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

Whether bedding can stay on the bed when it folds up depends on the mechanism. Bulky duvets and pillows may need storing nearby.

Leasehold flats can have rules on alterations, so check your lease early. We can’t advise on your lease.

Shelves

Shelf spans and depths are sized so they do not sag.

Bed mechanism housing

We build the housing to suit the mechanism, fixed securely as its maker specifies. The front can look like a set of cupboards.

Questions we are often asked

I live in a flat in Surrey Canal. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Surrey Canal?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes, that is a common request. A desk beside the bed suits a room that is an office by day, and any new sockets are for your electrician.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you.

Do you supply the mattress?

The mattress needs to suit the mechanism by size, depth and weight. We can talk you through what the mechanism allows, so the mattress you choose fits.

Why people ask for wall beds in Surrey Canal

Some want a room that can change as the family does. We often hear from people who want a playroom or study that can still sleep guests without giving up the floor.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • Room for a desk and a guest bed
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests

Queen's House, about 2.1 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.
