Fitted Home Offices in Catford

In Catford, we design fitted home offices around the room you actually have. Your home office is designed at a visit to your home and made at our workshop.

  • Files and folders piling up
  • Cables trailing across the desk and floor
  • Shelving that bows under the load

Pricing fitted home offices in Catford

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How big the furniture is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Getting in touch

These details help when you contact us:

  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Examples of the look you are after

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Fitted home offices for homes in Catford

In a period room, an alcove is often the right size for a compact desk. We scribe the desk and shelving to the alcove walls, which are rarely straight. The opposite alcove can carry shelves or a cupboard to match. It gives a home in Catford a workspace that looks part of the room. If you are living with a desk buried under papers and a screen that’s hard to read by the window, home offices made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

In a period house, a front-room bay gives a desk good daylight, while the recesses beside the chimney breast take shelving. If your home is one of the many around Catford built before 1919, a front room like that can become a study without losing its character. Everything is scribed to the room’s own walls.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. First you let us know about the room and what your work needs, including the equipment you use.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the desk, shelving and storage.
  3. You receive a written quote for the office we have discussed, for you to read through.
  4. The desk, shelving and cupboards are made in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use.

Before we arrive

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

How it is made

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits desks, panels and doors alike. It is carried out in the workshop for an even coat. The colour is your choice.

Pull-out drawers

Drawers can form a pedestal under the desk. Leave knee room in the middle. We plan it at the measuring visit.

Home working in Catford: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Catford were built before 1919 (about 68%) and since 2000 (about 14%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Catford is partly covered by the Culverley Green Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 26% of households in the area around Catford live in flats in converted or shared houses, the 2021 Census shows. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Andrew, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near Catford Bridge station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. The wider area includes historic houses like Eltham Palace, about 2.8 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

Catford is part of the London Borough of Lewisham, about 2 miles north of New Cross. Catford is part of the area we cover. We list Catford among 22 places we cover in Lewisham.

Practical tips

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Think about glare on your screen
  • Estimate the shelf space you’ll need
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Think about the space you need to push back

Heavy files are best kept low or close to the supports. That keeps shelves straight over the years. The shelves are made for what you said you’d keep on them.

A chair that bumps the desk can chip the paint. Ease the chair in rather than pushing it hard. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

FAQs: fitted home offices in Catford

I live near Catford Bridge station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Lewisham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room.

Can you fit fitted home offices to the uneven walls of an older house in Catford?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can you fit sockets in the desk?

Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, not us. The desk is planned with routes for cables and space for any sockets. We can agree where sockets should go when we visit.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How much does a fitted home office cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. It depends on how much furniture you want, the layout and the finish. To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and we will arrange a design visit.

Flats, leases and landlords

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.
