Wall Beds in St Johns
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make wall beds for homes in St Johns, each designed at a visit to your home.
- A bed that fills a little-used room
- A flexible room for a growing family
- Room for a desk and a guest bed

What prompts wall beds in St Johns
Sofa beds are not always comfortable for regular use. A wall bed takes a proper mattress, chosen to suit its mechanism, and the bed sits flat on its frame.
If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:
- A bed that looks like cupboards by day
- Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
- A flexible room for a growing family
- A living room with a bed that folds away
The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 1.1 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Wall beds in St Johns: what you get
A home office that doubles as a guest room is a common request. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, without the bed taking over. Cable routes for the desk can be planned in, while new sockets are for your electrician. If you’re living with a flexible room for a growing family and a storage wall with a bed inside, wall beds made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
Homes in an area like St Johns can come from many different periods, so a bedroom could have solid brick walls, lath and plaster, blockwork or plasterboard. Each wall is checked at the design visit before fixings are chosen. With a chimney breast, the alcoves are the obvious place; without one, a full wall typically is.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

From workshop to your room
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. Either way, the day is planned at the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
- The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
- Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.
Before we arrive
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Questions we’re often asked
Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in St Johns?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in St Johns?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.
How long will the wall bed take to fit?
Every room is different. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
Are fold-down beds safe to use?
A wall bed is designed to be used regularly as long as they’re fixed and used as the maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.
What happens when you come to measure?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.
What affects the price in St Johns
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.
Getting in touch
There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Your postcode and the borough
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- How you want to use the space
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
What wall beds cannot fix
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Structural work to the wall or floor
- Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
- Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.
What it’s made from
- Spray-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Shelves or a desk alongside
- Fold-down bed mechanism
- Hand-painted finish
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Bedrooms in St Johns: local notes

Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and wall beds can be designed to work around them. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. We ask about parking at the design visit, so the van can be planned for.
Living in a block of flats near St Johns station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For a family home near Ashmead Primary School, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.
