Hand-painted finish

If you’d like the bed to match the skirting or doors, hand painting works well.

Birch plywood

Shelves beside a wall bed often carry books, and birch plywood helps them resist sagging.

Wall beds for homes in Holland Park

Studio flats benefit more than most from a bed that folds away. During the day, the room is somewhere to sit, work and eat, and at night it becomes a bedroom. Storage and shelving can go on either side or above to make the most of the wall. If your home has a hobby room with a bed for guests and room for a desk and a guest bed, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Around Holland Park, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast with an alcove either side. Fitted storage can sit in the alcoves or span the wall, chimney breast and all. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so the pieces are scribed to the wall and levelled at the base.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

How fitting day works

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the bed, the storage and the finish.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Ask for a quote

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Questions we are often asked

Do you make wall beds for homes in Holland Park?

Yes. Holland Park is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Kensington and Chelsea and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Kensington Olympia station?

Yes. We cover all of Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Do you supply the mattress?

The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We will explain its limits at the measuring visit, so you can choose with confidence.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

What affects the price in Holland Park

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What we need to know

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Holland Park

Homes built before 1919 make up about 69% of the housing in the streets around Holland Park, with about 11% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Holland Park, 20 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. About 29% of households in the neighbourhood around Holland Park live in flats in converted or shared houses, the 2021 Census shows. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Leighton House, about 0.4 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. If you live in a flat close to Kensington Olympia station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For families living near Holland Park School, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Practical tips

A little care keeps the finish looking good. These practical tips help:

  • Tell us what the wall is made of if you know
  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Check mattress size and weight limits

The mechanism maker’s guidance says how much bedding can stay on the bed when it folds away. We can build a cupboard beside the bed for extra bedding.

Check how much floor there is in front of the cabinet. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so think about where a chair or desk will go.
