Fitted bedroom furniture in Notting Hill

About 69% of the homes in the streets around Notting Hill went up before 1919, and about 11% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. There are 294 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Notting Hill. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and wall beds can be designed to work around them. About 31% of households in the streets around Notting Hill live in flats in converted or shared houses, the 2021 Census shows. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

Close to Holland Park? Keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright. Near listed buildings like Cosmic House, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Notting Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. Living in a block of flats near Shepherds Bush station? Then wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Wall beds in Notting Hill

The bed mechanism must be fixed securely, exactly as its maker specifies, to a wall and floor that can take the load. We check the wall and floor at the design visit, because the fixing has to suit what the wall is made of. People typically come to us about a hobby room with a bed for guests and a storage wall with a bed inside, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. A large share of the homes around Notting Hill date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the wall bed we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

What it costs

Several things affect the price:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The overall size of the piece
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

These details help when you contact us:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Where you live, with the postcode

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Looking after your furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Keep children away while the bed moves
  • Measure the clear space in front of the wall

The paint needs time to cure fully after fitting. Go easy on the doors and front at first, and wipe the cabinet with a soft cloth only.

Leasehold flats can have rules on alterations, so check your lease early. We can’t advise on your lease.

How it’s made

Shelves

We can add shelving around the bed for books, boxes or display.

Spray-painted finish

For a sleek front, spray painting works well and is finished before it reaches you.

From workshop to your room

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how often the bed is used.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, look at the wall and talk through the design. We also check there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. You get a written quote for the bed cabinet and any storage around it.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The bed and cabinets are fitted in your home and the mechanism fixed securely. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.

Preparing the room

Common questions about wall beds

Do you cover homes near Shepherds Bush station?

Yes, homes across Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Notting Hill?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

How much time does fitting need?

How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Is it possible to add a desk beside the wall bed?

Yes. We often design the bed as part of a wider storage wall with shelves or a desk beside it. The design keeps clear space in front for the bed to fold down.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

When you need someone else

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Wiring for lights or chargers
  • Advice on your lease
  • Structural work to the wall or floor

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
