About our wall beds in Enfield

The mattress has to suit the mechanism, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We will talk through what suits the bed during the design visit, so the mattress you choose fits. If you are living with storage built around a fold-down bed and a guest room that sits empty most of the time, that is what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A good part of the housing around Enfield is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic spot for fitted furniture. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the wall bed we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

What affects the cost of wall beds

The price for your room depends on:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The internal fittings
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Helping us understand the room

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit. To book one, drop us a line using the contact form.

From workshop to your room

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually simple, though we still measure the route in not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wall bed and any storage.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.

How to prepare

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Arranging a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.

Related advice

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.

What we don’t do

Not everything around wall beds is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Making good the walls after other work
  • Building work to make a wall sound
  • Getting consent under your lease

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Questions from Enfield

Do you cover homes near Enfield Town station?

Yes. We cover the whole of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Enfield?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Will a wall bed work on my wall?

That depends on what the wall and floor are made of. The mechanism has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies, to a wall or floor that can take the load, so we check it during the design visit.

Do you supply the mattress?

What matters most is that the mattress suits the mechanism. We’ll explain its limits at the measuring visit, so you can pick the right one.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.

Wall beds in Enfield: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Enfield were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 31%) and before 1919 (about 24%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 53 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Enfield. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and wall beds can be designed to work around them. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Enfield, as it does anywhere else in London. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

For families living near Enfield Grammar School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. For an older house near Church of St Andrew, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. For a flat near Enfield Town station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
