Wall beds in Connaught Village: what you get

The cabinet is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray painted in our workshop or hand painted. From the front, the folded bed can look like a set of tall cupboards, sitting quietly in the room. If your home has a living room with a bed that folds away and a study that doubles as a spare room, wall beds made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Connaught Village, and many blocks have rules about using the lift and when work can happen. Checking with the building’s managing agent early keeps the day running smoothly. If your flat is leasehold, your lease may also need checking before wall beds are fixed to the walls.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Sections come into the flat in the order they’re fitted, so the flat doesn’t fill up. Floors are covered and dust is kept down. The fixings suit each wall, whether solid or stud.

  1. You let us know about the room.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the bed, the storage and the finish.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.

How to prepare

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Starting with a design visit

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you’re ready, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

FAQs: wall beds in Connaught Village

I live near London Paddington station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Westminster and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Connaught Village?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is a wall bed safe for everyday use?

Safety depends on a secure fixing and sensible use. We fix the mechanism as its maker specifies, and you keep the space in front clear and children away while it moves.

How much space does a wall bed need?

It depends on the bed size and the mechanism. At the design visit we measure the room and check there’s enough space in front.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Keep children away while the bed moves
  • Measure the clear space in front of the wall

Keep to the mattress size and weight the mechanism allows, as a heavier one can affect how the bed balances. If you change the mattress later, check it against those limits.

Consider how often the bed will be used and by whom. That helps decide its size and the mechanism as well as the storage around it.

Bedrooms in Connaught Village: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 44% of the housing in the area around Connaught Village, with about 17% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Connaught Village is partly covered by the Bayswater Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. For fitting in Connaught Village, a van typically needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know about parking near your home during the design visit.

If you live near Hyde Park, wall beds are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. For families living near Hampden Gurney CofE Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Why people ask for wall beds in Connaught Village

Working from home has changed how many spare rooms are used. People want a desk by day and a bed for visitors, and a wall bed makes that possible.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • A bed that fills a little-used room
  • A home office that also sleeps guests
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day
  • A playroom that can sleep visitors

The wider area includes historic houses such as Handel Hendrix House, about 0.9 miles east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Could you do it yourself?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

Ready-made wall bed units are available and normally cost less, and they can work in a simple space. They come in set sizes and finishes and rarely allow for an uneven wall or an alcove. Ours is made to the room you have. Standard furniture sizes rarely suit the shape of a flat, so it can waste space or block a door or radiator. Fitted furniture is planned around those.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
