Fitted wardrobes in Connaught Village: what you get
Wardrobes can be built around a bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window, with a dressing table or seat in between. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. If you’re living with damp or musty clothes against an external wall and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do, fitted wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Connaught Village, and blocks often have rules on lift booking, deliveries and working hours. It helps to check those with the managing agent before fitting day. If your flat is leasehold, your lease may also need checking before fitted wardrobes are fixed to the walls.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Large flat-pack wardrobes can be hard to build in a small bedroom. We make fitted wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home, ready to assemble in the room. Large ready-made pieces can be hard to get up the stairs or into the lift, whereas fitted furniture comes in sections made for the way in. It is then put together in the room.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

Flats, conversions and lettings
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
Materials and finishes
Plinths and scribe strips
In period rooms, we normally scribe the sides and the top. It is what makes the wardrobe look built in.
Moisture-resistant MDF
With no grain to show through, MDF gives a calm painted finish. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice for fitted work.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Connaught Village
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Connaught Village?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
My home in Connaught Village is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?
The space in front of the wardrobe normally decides it. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense, while hinged doors suit rooms with space to open them. We’ll look at the room with you at the design visit.
How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?
It is worked out with you when we measure, starting from the clothes you have. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.
Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?
Yes, as long as it’s ventilated. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe, which helps avoid condensation.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Do you need fitted wardrobes in Connaught Village?
An awkward room is another reason. Slopes, chimney breasts, low windows and doors in awkward spots leave standard wardrobes with nowhere to go. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Space under the eaves going to waste
- Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
- Mismatched bedroom furniture
- Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
Close to Hyde Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.
Choosing a carpenter
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
Bedroom storage in Connaught Village
Homes built before 1919 make up about 44% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Connaught Village, with about 17% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of Connaught Village is in the Bayswater Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 44% of homes in the neighbourhood around Connaught Village were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths.
For a family home near Hampden Gurney CofE Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Handel Hendrix House, about 0.9 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for each of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all, which the design allows for.
