Fitted cupboards for your home in Connaught Village

Fitted cupboards in Connaught Village: what you get

In many London hallways, space is tight, so every cupboard needs to be worth the room it takes. We can make a shallow cupboard for coats, shoes and bags that still leaves room to pass, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. A bench with a lift-up lid or drawers under it is another option, so there is somewhere to sit by the door. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about making use of an awkward alcove or corner and tall cupboards where space is short.

In a flat without a loft, storage has to be found in the hall, the recesses and the rooms themselves. Around Connaught Village, where most households live in purpose-built flats, that’s worth thinking about early. Shallow cupboards and seats with storage add a lot without taking much floor.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Honest limits

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Relocating meters or the fuse board
  • Wiring for lights or sockets
  • Any gas work around the boiler

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Adjustable shelves
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Ventilated doors

Is bespoke worth it?

If you are likely to move soon and want to take the furniture with you, standalone cupboards may suit you better. Fitted storage is built in for good and is designed for this home. How long you’ll stay is worth weighing up. In a flat, every bit of floor counts, and standalone furniture uses more of it than it needs. Built-in pieces use the full height and the tricky corners.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

What happens on fitting day

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it is sized to be manageable. The stair turns and landings set the limit. The pieces are assembled in the flat.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. The cupboards are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on edges that meet the walls.
  5. We fit the cupboards and trim the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Advice

Flats, leases and landlords

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Connaught Village

I live in a flat in Connaught Village. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do you cover homes near London Paddington station?

Yes, homes across Westminster and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?

Yes, while keeping access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so we design doors or removable panels for that.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do photos help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

What we need to know

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Where you live, with the postcode
