Is bespoke worth it?
A bespoke wall bed takes more planning than buying a unit online. What you get is one design that suits the room and the way you use it. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set sizes, and real rooms rarely match them, so it leaves gaps at the ends and empty space above. Built-in pieces fill the space they’re made for.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

About our wall beds in Cowley
A wall bed, sometimes called a Murphy bed, lifts up into a cabinet during the day and comes down when it’s time to sleep. It lets one room do two jobs, like a spare room that’s also a study. We make the cabinet for your room and paint it in a colour you choose. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a living room with a bed that folds away and a spare room that’s rarely slept in.
Where the window, radiator and door sit decides most of a bedroom layout. For any home in Cowley, those are the first things we note during the design visit, and fitted furniture is planned around them. Furniture is kept clear of radiators so the room stays warm.
You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

When is bespoke worth it?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Materials and finishes
Bed mechanism housing
We build the housing to suit the mechanism, fixed securely as its maker specifies. When the bed is up, the front looks like cupboard doors.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood gives a strong carcass for a piece that moves every day.
Bedrooms in Cowley: local notes
About 29% of the homes in the area around Cowley went up since 2000, and about 26% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 19 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Cowley. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. All of London, Hillingdon included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Cowley fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned during the design visit.
Ickenham Hall, about 2.9 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. If your children go to Cowley St Laurence CofE Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Laurence, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Cowley is about 5 miles north-east of Ruislip, part of the London Borough of Hillingdon. Questions from Cowley
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Cowley?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
I live near West Drayton station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Hillingdon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do pictures help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on your lease, so it is worth checking before fitting day.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
The furniture is built in sections. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.
What happens on fitting day
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift as well as the room, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.
- You get in touch and describe the room.
- We visit to measure the room and the way in, from the front door to the room itself.

How to get a quote
Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

How we price wall beds
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Parking near your home
- Spray painting or hand painting
- How square the room is
- The width and height of the space
There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing. To start, message us from the contact page.
What we need to know
When you contact us, these help most:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- The type of home and how the room is reached
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, message us from the contact page.
