Wall beds in Northfields
Do you need wall beds in Northfields?
Plenty of spare rooms have become home offices. The room needs to be an office and still sleep guests, and a wall bed makes that possible.
We are often asked to help with:
- A spare room that is rarely slept in
- A bed that looks like cupboards by day
- Storage built around a fold-down bed
- A home office that also sleeps guests
If your children go to Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
Wall beds in Northfields: what you get
We build the bed housing from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray painted in our workshop or hand painted. From the front, the folded bed can look like a set of tall cupboards, so the room does not read as a bedroom by day. Most enquiries start with hiding the bed when it’s not in use and a guest room that sits empty most of the time; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Northfields built before 1919, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Your questions about wall beds in Northfields
Is parking a problem for fitting in Northfields?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
I live near Brentford station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Can a wall bed go on any wall?
We check that at the design visit. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker’s instructions set what’s needed.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

How fitting day works
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.
- We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there.
- We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
- We send a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and storage.
- We build and finish everything in our workshop.
- We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.
Preparing the room
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Keep pets in another room while we work
Starting with a design visit
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

Caring for painted furniture
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Keep children away while the bed moves
- Check your lease if you live in a flat
- Think about where extra bedding will go
- Check there’s room for the bed to fold down
The paint needs time to cure fully after fitting. Go easy on the doors and front at first, and clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth.
Measure the space in front of the wall, not just the wall. The bed needs room to fold down, so plan where furniture will sit.
What affects the cost of wall beds
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- The width and height of the space
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, then set it out in the quote.
Helping us understand the room
Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you contact us, it’s useful to send:
- How you want to use the space
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Where you live, with the postcode
To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Northfields homes and wall beds
Homes built before 1919 make up about 63% of the housing in the area around Northfields, with about 19% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Northfields, 6 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in Northfields, let us know at the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
The wider area includes historic houses like Boston Manor, about 0.5 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Near listed buildings like Boston Manor House, about 0.5 miles south of the centre of Northfields, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
