Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

About our wall beds in Southall

We build the bed housing from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Doors on the front can look like a run of cupboards, sitting quietly in the room. We make wall beds from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a study that doubles as a spare room and a playroom that can sleep visitors.

In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Southall, so that shape of room is worth knowing. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Questions from Southall

Is Southall in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes, Southall is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Ealing and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Southall station?

Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

How much space does a wall bed need?

It depends on the bed size and the mechanism. We measure up and make sure the bed has room to fold down.

Is it possible to add a desk beside the wall bed?

Yes, and it’s one of the best ways to use the wall. Shelves and cupboards around the bed make the most of the space, and any new sockets are for your electrician.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

How much time does fitting need?

The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We’ll talk it through at the design visit.

Is it time for wall beds?

A flexible room is useful as needs change. A playroom, a study or a hobby room can still have a bed for visitors without giving up the floor.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • A playroom that can sleep visitors
  • A proper bed instead of a sofa bed
  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day

If you live in a period home close to Saint John, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

How fitting works for wall beds

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Wall beds arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Arranging a design visit

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

How we price wall beds

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking near your home
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

What to send when you contact us

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • How you want to use the space
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Examples of the look you’re after

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

How it is made

Bed mechanism housing

The housing has to be strong and square, so we build it with care. It is fixed to a sound wall or floor.

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, which matters for the parts that carry the bed. The edge can be left on show or painted.
