Wall beds in Hanwell
About our wall beds in Hanwell
Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, without the bed taking over. Cable routes for the desk can be planned in, while new sockets are for your electrician. People usually come to us about a flexible room for a growing family and hiding the bed when it’s not in use; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Floors in older houses often slope, which matters around Hanwell, as a large share of homes there date from before 1919. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

- Wiring for lights or chargers

- Supplying mattresses
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Caring for painted furniture
Getting the most from wall beds starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Check mattress size and weight limits
- Mention if the wall is a stud wall
- Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
- Plan where chairs and desks will sit
New paintwork takes a while to harden. Treat the cabinet gently at first, and clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth.
If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. We can’t advise on your lease.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Wall beds for homes in Hanwell
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hanwell were built before 1919 (about 53%) and since 2000 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Hanwell is partly covered by the Hanwell Clock Tower Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. The share of homes built before 1919 around Hanwell, about 53%, is well above the figure for Ealing as a whole, about 28%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.
Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary, about 0.5 miles north-west of the centre of Hanwell, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near Hanwell station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. The wider area includes historic houses such as Pitzhanger Manor, about 1.3 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

How fitting day works
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.
- First, you let us know about the space. Mention who the bed is for.
- The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout.
- A quote in writing is sent to you.
- The cabinets are made at our workshop.
- The wall bed is fitted in your home.
Preparing the room
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Questions we’re often asked
Is Hanwell in the area you cover for wall beds?
Yes. Hanwell is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Ealing and London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Hanwell?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?
That depends on what the wall and floor are made of. The mechanism has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies, to a wall or floor that can take the load, so we check it at the measuring visit.
Are fold-down beds safe to use?
Wall beds are made for regular use when fixed and used as its maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.
Can a wall bed have storage around it?
Yes, that’s a common request. Shelves and cupboards around the bed make the most of the space, while new sockets are for your electrician.
How much does a wall bed cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A single bed cabinet and a full wall with shelves and a desk are very different jobs, so we quote once we’ve seen the room. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
Flats, conversions and lettings
If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.
