How we make wall beds for South Ealing

Spare rooms in London homes are often small, and the bed fills the room even when no one is staying. A wall bed gives that floor back during the day for a desk, a hobby or just space. Guests still get a proper bed when they stay. If you are living with hiding the bed when it’s not in use and a playroom that can sleep visitors, wall beds made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

A large share of the homes around South Ealing were built before 1919, and bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast with an alcove either side. Fitted storage can sit in the alcoves or span the wall, chimney breast and all. Because older floors slope and walls bow, everything is scribed and levelled on site.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Where other trades come in

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Decorating around the cabinet
  • Structural work to the wall or floor
  • Supplying mattresses

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Fold-down bed mechanism

Looking after your furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Check mattress size and weight limits
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit

New paintwork takes a while to harden. Go easy on the doors and front at first, and wipe the cabinet with a soft cloth only.

Leasehold flats can have rules on alterations, so check your lease early. We can’t advise on your lease.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Common questions about wall beds

Is parking a problem for fitting in South Ealing?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near South Ealing affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes, that is a common request. Shelves and cupboards around the bed make the most of the space, while new sockets are for your electrician.

Can you make wall beds for a home in South Ealing?

Yes, we do. We design and make wall beds for homes in South Ealing, and the process is the same everywhere we go.

South Ealing homes and wall beds

About 66% of the homes in the streets around South Ealing went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of South Ealing, 7 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. The share of homes built before 1919 around South Ealing, about 66%, is well above the figure for Ealing as a whole, about 28%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of wall beds.

If you live near Lammas Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. If you live in a flat close to Brentford station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. The wider area includes historic houses like Gunnersbury Park, about 0.7 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than a quick order. What you get is one design that suits the room and the way you use it. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Each side can be made to its own size.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What happens on fitting day

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You let us know about the room and who the bed is for. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
  2. We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. We build and finish everything in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
