About our wall beds in Harlington
A wall bed, sometimes called a Murphy bed, lifts up into a cabinet during the day and comes down when it’s time to sleep. It means a room can work as more than a bedroom, so a guest room can double as a study or playroom. We build the cabinet around the bed to suit the room and finish it to match. Most enquiries start with a storage wall with a bed inside and a study that doubles as a spare room, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Post-war bedrooms often have a wide window with a radiator underneath, so storage typically goes on the walls beside or opposite. Around Harlington, many homes date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, so it’s a layout worth planning for. Nothing is built tight over the radiator, so it keeps heating the room.
We write quotes in plain English. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Your questions about wall beds in Harlington
Does a conservation area in or near Harlington affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Do you make wall beds for homes in Harlington?
Yes, we work across Hillingdon, Harlington included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
Who chooses the colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
Getting it in is planned during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Harlington homes and wall beds
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Harlington were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 49%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. There are 13 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Harlington. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Hillingdon has its own. If your street in Harlington is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. Parking near your home is worth mentioning during the design visit.
If you live near Lake Farm Country Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. If your children go to William Byrd Primary Academy or a school nearby, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

What affects the cost of wall beds
To work out the quote, we look at:
- How square the room is
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- The overall size of the piece
Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.
What to send when you get in touch
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Your postcode and the borough
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well for a clean, even look.
Birch plywood
For a sturdy cabinet, birch plywood is a good choice for a piece that moves every day.
What happens on fitting day
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Walls in post-war homes can be concrete or blockwork, so the right fixings are part of the plan for fitting day. We protect floors and doorways as the furniture comes in.
- First, you tell us about the room and how you’d like it to work.
- We visit, measure up and check the wall the bed will fix to.
- You get a written quote for the bed cabinet and any storage around it.
- The cabinets are made at our workshop.
- We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Empty the space we will be working in
Getting a quote
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Advice
More for homes in Harlington
Why people ask for wall beds in Harlington
Most people come to us with a guest room that sits empty most of the year. A standard bed takes up the floor all the time, and folding it away gives the room a second life.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- A studio that works by day and night
- A spare room that’s rarely slept in
- Storage built around a fold-down bed
- A playroom that can sleep visitors
For an older house near Church of St Peter and St Paul, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.
Before you choose who makes it
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- How the doors are hung and adjusted

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
