Wall beds in Lee

A wall bed, sometimes called a Murphy bed, lifts up into a cabinet during the day and comes down when it is time to sleep. It lets one room do two jobs, so a guest room can double as a study or playroom. We make the cabinet for your room and paint it in a colour you choose. Typical reasons to get in touch are a storage wall with a bed inside and a studio that works by day and night, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Older bedrooms usually have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Lee date from then. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed, so the furniture suits the house.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Why bespoke in Lee?

A wall bed is fixed to the house, so it stays when you move. How long you’ll be in the home is worth weighing up before you decide. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so wall beds are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

The problems wall beds solve

Most people come to us with a guest room that sits empty most of the year. A bed fills the room whether anyone is using it or not, and folding it away gives the room a second life.

Here’s what wall beds can help with:

  • Hiding the bed when it’s not in use
  • A flexible room for a growing family
  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • More floor space in a studio flat

Eltham Palace, about 1.7 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

Bedrooms in Lee: local notes

About 49% of the homes in the area around Lee went up before 1919, and about 19% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Lee is in the Lee Manor Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Your council can advise if you are unsure. About 49% of homes in the streets around Lee were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). A wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies, and in houses of that age the walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, so the fixings are chosen with care.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of the Good Shepherd, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Close to Manor House Gardens? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Looking after your furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
  • Think about how often the bed will be used
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Allow space for pillows and duvets

Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched up. Spray-painted finishes clean easily with a soft cloth and keep their smooth look.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Common questions about wall beds

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Lee station?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room.

My home in Lee is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

The mechanism maker sets which mattresses suit the bed, including its size, depth and weight. We will go through those limits during the design visit so you can choose one that works.

Is a wall bed safe?

Wall beds are made for regular use when fixed and used as its maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.

Will a wall bed work on my wall?

We check that at the design visit. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.

How much does a wall bed cost?
