About our wall beds in Ardleigh Green

Our wall beds are made for homes in Ardleigh Green and all over London. It starts with a design visit to measure the room and check the wall, followed by a quote. We make everything in our workshop and fit it in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you’ll know ahead of time. If you are living with a study that doubles as a spare room and a storage wall with a bed inside, wall beds made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

A good part of the housing around Ardleigh Green is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. The main bedroom may have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the wall bed designed for your room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

Before and after fitting day

Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit

Should the bed start to move differently, stop and let us know. The mechanism should only be adjusted as its maker allows.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

Honest limits

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Decorating around the cabinet
  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • Building work to make a wall sound

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Hand-painted finish

How it is made

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting suits a cabinet that should match the room’s woodwork.

Bed mechanism housing

A wall bed housing needs to be rigid and true, so we build it with care. It is fixed into a wall or floor that can take the load.

Fitting day, step by step

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, from the front door to the room itself. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinet is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. The cabinet is joined in the room, fixed securely and set level, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Advice

Questions we are often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Gidea Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Ardleigh Green?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

It’s made in sections, sized for the route along with the room itself. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.

What prompts wall beds in Ardleigh Green

Studio flats and small one-bedroom flats are another reason. With the bed away, the main room is a living space again until bedtime.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • More floor space in a studio flat
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests
  • A bed that fills a little-used room

If you live near Haynes Park, wall beds are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
