Questions we’re often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Dalston Junction station?

Yes, homes across Hackney and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in De Beauvoir Town?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Are fold-down beds safe to use?

A secure fixing and careful use are what matter. The mechanism is fixed exactly as its maker sets out, and you keep the space in front clear and children away while it moves.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.

How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?

That comes down to the size of the bed. At the design visit we measure the room and check there’s enough space in front.

Wall beds for homes in De Beauvoir Town

Many spare rooms are only just big enough for a bed, and a bed that’s used a few times a year takes most of the floor. When the bed is folded away, the room is open again for a desk, a hobby or just space. Guests still get a proper bed when they stay. If you’re living with a flexible room for a growing family and a proper bed instead of a sofa bed, that is what wall beds are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Most homes around De Beauvoir Town are purpose-built flats, whether in mansion blocks or newer developments. In a mansion block, bedrooms often keep their chimney breasts and tall ceilings, while modern flats tend to have plasterboard partitions. Either way, wall beds are fixed to suit the wall.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

How fitting works for wall beds

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so tell us about bays, permits or any loading area during the design visit. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. First, you tell us about the room and how you’d like it to work.
  2. We visit, measure up and check the wall the bed will fix to.
  3. We send a quote setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bed cabinet and any shelves or desk are made in our workshop.
  5. The bed and cabinets are fitted in your home and the mechanism fixed securely.

Advice

What prompts wall beds in De Beauvoir Town

The most common reason is a spare room that’s rarely slept in. A standard bed takes up the floor all the time, and a wall bed lets the room be used every day.

Wall beds can help with:

  • Hiding the bed when it is not in use
  • A home office that also sleeps guests
  • A flexible room for a growing family
  • A spare room that is rarely slept in

Near listed buildings like St Paul's Church, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of De Beauvoir Town, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

Tips worth knowing

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Measure the clear space in front of the wall
  • Keep children away while the bed moves
  • Check mattress size and weight limits
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat

If the bed ever feels different when you lower or lift it, stop using it and get in touch. The mechanism should only be adjusted as its maker allows.

Check how the cabinet will get into the room. We make the cabinet in sections that fit up the stairs and through the doors, so it is useful to know about tight turns.

Wall beds in De Beauvoir Town: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 39% of the housing in the area around De Beauvoir Town, with about 25% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of De Beauvoir Town, 15 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 23% of households in the area around De Beauvoir Town live in flats in converted or shared houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

If you live near Shoreditch Park, wall beds are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. For an older house near Church of St Peter, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

What we don’t do

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Building work to make a wall sound
  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
