Loft storage in Little Ilford

Loft storage in Little Ilford

Behind the short walls at the edge of a loft room, there’s often space going to waste. Eaves cupboards and pull-out drawers built into the knee wall put it to work. Pull-out drawers mean you do not have to crawl in. We measure and plan for the space you have in Little Ilford. If your home has boxes piled on loft boards and a loft room that still feels unfinished, eaves cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Older homes like many around Little Ilford have floors and ceilings that slope, and a large share of the homes around Little Ilford date from then. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that isn’t. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly, and the paint colour is agreed with you.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Storage in Little Ilford homes: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Little Ilford, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 58%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List records 8 entries within half a mile of the centre of Little Ilford. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

The wider area includes historic houses like Valentines Mansion, about 1.5 miles north. If your own home is a period one, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. If you live in a flat close to Manor Park station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For a family home near Sir John Heron Primary School, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

When is bespoke worth it?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

When you need someone else

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Anything that needs Building Regulations sign-off
  • Structural changes, such as cutting into rafters or joists
  • Electrical work in the loft

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish

What affects the cost of loft storage

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Getting in touch

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • How you want to use the space

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

What happens on fitting day

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it’s useful to tell us during the design visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You let us know about your converted or boarded loft, including the eaves and any dormer.
  2. At the design visit, the room and the route up are measured.
  3. We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a quote in writing.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. It is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you.

Preparing the room

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

How to get a quote

To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and a quote in writing follows.

Advice

Common questions about loft storage

My home in Little Ilford is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Little Ilford?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do photos help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

What are your eaves cupboards made from?

Our loft storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Both are stable, which matters in a loft room. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Check the route up to the loft
  • Think about hanging space for a loft bedroom
  • Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves

Wiping the fronts with a soft, damp cloth is normally all they need. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The edges around handles are touched most.

Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly. It helps to clear out now and then. Keep the heaviest things near the floor.
