How we make wall beds for Manor Park

Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, without the bed taking over. Cable routes for the desk can be planned in, though any new sockets are for your electrician. If your home has a bed that fills a little-used room and a studio that works by day and night, that’s what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Manor Park, lots of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Cold external walls can lead to condensation, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture is part of the design. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit wall beds and other fitted storage well.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the wall bed we have designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

Common questions about wall beds

Can you make wall beds for a home in Manor Park?

Yes, Manor Park is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Newham and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Manor Park?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes. We often design the bed as part of a wider storage wall with shelves or a desk beside it. We plan it so the bed still has room to come down.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Do you supply the mattress?

The mechanism maker sets which mattresses suit the bed by size, depth and weight. We can talk you through what the mechanism allows, so the mattress you choose fits.

What we don’t do

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Structural work to the wall or floor
  • Plastering or decorating the room
  • Choosing a mattress for you

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Birch plywood
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Hand-painted finish

What happens on fitting day

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays during the design visit.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and the colour.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The wall bed is fitted, and any hand painting is done on site. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.

Tips worth knowing

Getting the most from wall beds starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Think about where extra bedding will go
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first

Follow the mechanism maker’s guidance each time you lower and lift the bed. Lower it steadily and keep the space in front clear, and don’t let children play with it.

Think about who will sleep in the bed and how often. That helps decide its size and the mechanism, and whether a desk or shelves go around it.

Is bespoke worth it?

Standard units seldom reach the ceiling or fit wall to wall. A bespoke cabinet can run the full width and height and fill the rest of the wall with storage. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Each side can be made to its own size.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the softer look of a hand-painted finish that suits older homes.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits parts that carry load. The edge can be left on show or painted.
