Wall beds in Millwall: local notes

About 52% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Millwall went up since 2000, and about 24% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. There are 23 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Millwall. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. All of London, Tower Hamlets included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Millwall. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.

If you live near Mudchute Park and Farm, keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright. If your children go to Harbinger Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

About our wall beds in Millwall

Spare rooms in London homes are often small, and the bed fills the room even when no one is staying. When the bed is folded away, the room is open again for a desk, a hobby or just space. Guests still get a proper bed when they stay. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a bed that fills a little-used room and hiding the bed when it’s not in use.

Many homes around Millwall were built since 2000, and a newer bedroom seldom comes with storage that fits how you live. We design wall beds around the window, the radiator and the door, so the room still works. In a managed block, the lift and delivery rules are worth checking before fitting day.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Common questions about wall beds

I live in a flat in Millwall. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Millwall?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Are fold-down beds safe to use?

Safety depends on a secure fixing and sensible use. The mechanism is fixed exactly as its maker sets out, and you keep the space in front clear and children away while it moves.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so we protect the route before carrying anything in. Door frames and corners get covers too. The sections are assembled in the room.

  1. You let us know about the room.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the bed, the storage and the finish.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the cabinets in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.

Starting with a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Advice

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than a quick order. What you get is one design that suits the room and the way you use it. Off-the-shelf depths can crowd a compact new-build room, whereas fitted pieces can be as shallow as the space needs. It can still go to the ceiling.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Millwall

  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Designed for the room you have
  • Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

See how bespoke compares with ready-made and how to compare quotes.

Is it time for wall beds?

Often the bed is one part of a bigger plan. Shelves, cupboards or a desk built around it turn one wall into storage, workspace and a bed.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Shelves or a desk around the bed
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time
  • Room for a desk and a guest bed
  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day

If you live in a flat close to Deptford station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • How parking will work on your street

How to choose a carpenter in London

Could you do it yourself?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
