Before and after fitting day

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Check mattress size and weight limits
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Check there is room for the bed to fold down
  • Think about where extra bedding will go

Check the mattress stays within the limits the mechanism maker sets, because a mattress outside those limits can affect the balance. A new mattress should suit the mechanism too.

Think about the route into the room. We make the cabinet in sections that fit up the stairs and through the doors, so it is useful to know about tight turns.

Wall beds in North Greenwich

The bed mechanism must be fixed securely, exactly as its maker specifies, into a wall or floor that’s sound enough to hold it. We check the wall and floor during the design visit, because the fixing has to suit what the wall is made of. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a study that doubles as a spare room and a storage wall with a bed inside.

Many homes around North Greenwich were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are compact flats in newer blocks. In a compact bedroom, fitted furniture that reaches the ceiling and uses the corners makes the most difference. Boxing for pipes and risers is designed around rather than left as dead space.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Bedrooms in North Greenwich: local notes

About 52% of the homes in the streets around North Greenwich went up since 2000, and about 24% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 21 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of North Greenwich. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. All of London, Tower Hamlets included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in North Greenwich. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 0.8 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. For families living near Harbinger Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

How fitting works for wall beds

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections built in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Door frames and corners get covers too. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Ask for a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

FAQs: wall beds in North Greenwich

How do you fit wall beds in a flat in North Greenwich?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Is parking a problem for fitting in North Greenwich?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

The mattress needs to suit the mechanism, including its size, depth and weight. We’ll go through those limits during the design visit so you can choose one that works.

How it is made

Shelves

Shelves can go above or beside the bed cabinet to make use of the whole wall.

Hand-painted finish

If you’d like the bed to match the skirting or doors, hand painting works well.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it during the design visit.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

The problems wall beds solve

Sofa beds are not always comfortable for regular use. With a wall bed, guests sleep on a real mattress, on a proper frame.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Room for a desk and a guest bed
  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed
  • A living room with a bed that folds away

Near listed buildings like Church of St Nicholas, about 0.5 miles south of the centre of North Greenwich, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
