How we make wall beds for New Barnet

Studio flats benefit more than most from a bed that folds away. By day, the room is a living space; at night, the bed comes down. Storage and shelving can go on either side or above to make the most of the wall. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are shelves or a desk around the bed and a hobby room with a bed for guests.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around New Barnet, bedrooms usually have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. That makes a full wall of fitted furniture simple to plan, laid out around what you store. If the loft has been converted, sloping ceilings bring their own options.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Fitting day, step by step

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, from the front door to the room itself.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the bed cabinet in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cabinet is joined in the room, fixed securely and set level, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before we arrive

Getting a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

What affects the price in New Barnet

The price for your room depends on:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The internal fittings
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What we need to know

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Where you live, with the postcode

To get a quote, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Wall beds in New Barnet: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around New Barnet were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 32%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Flats, conversions and lettings

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Questions we are often asked

I live near New Barnet station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Is New Barnet in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes. New Barnet is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barnet and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?

It depends on the wall and floor. The mechanism has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies, to a wall or floor that can take the load, and we look at this when we measure.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Typically not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the softer look of a hand-painted finish that suits older homes.

Bed mechanism housing

A wall bed housing needs to be rigid and true, so it’s built from sturdy board. It is fixed to a sound wall or floor.
