Flats, conversions and lettings
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.
Fitted wardrobes in North Greenwich: what you get
Wardrobes can be built around a bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. Others work around a window, with a dressing table or seat in between. The layout is planned so the room does not feel boxed in. If your home has condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and space under the eaves going to waste, that is what fitted wardrobes are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Hinged doors need space to open, which a compact bedroom may not have, so sliding doors or a careful layout can help. Many homes around North Greenwich were built since 2000, and bedrooms in newer homes are often compact. We measure the space in front as well as the wall.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Bedrooms in North Greenwich: local notes
In the neighbourhood around North Greenwich, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 52%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 24%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List has 21 entries within half a mile of the centre of North Greenwich. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. More than half of the homes in the area around North Greenwich (about 52%) were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Nicholas, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If your children go to Harbinger Primary School or a school nearby, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. For a flat near Greenwich station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Stud walls can carry pipes and cables, so we check before drilling, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing.
- You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
- We come to measure and discuss the design, including the doors and the finish.
- We send a quote in writing.
- The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
- At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.
Before fitting day
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Arranging a design visit
It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Is bespoke worth it?
Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls. Large standalone pieces don’t always fit the lift or the hallway, while fitted furniture comes in sections sized for the route. It is then assembled and fixed in the room.
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

How we price fitted wardrobes
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- The internal fittings
- How square the room is
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.
Helping us understand the room
To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Your postcode and the borough

Tips worth knowing
These points come up often when people plan fitted wardrobes. They help before and after fitting:
- List the things that won’t hang, such as jumpers and shoes
- Tell us which walls face outside
- In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
- For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that is barely damp. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners.
Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose.
Questions from North Greenwich
Do you cover homes near Greenwich station?
Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?
Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, in moisture-resistant MDF. If there’s damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
The time on site depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Should I send photos?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
