Wall beds in Pentonville

The mattress has to suit the mechanism; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We’ll talk through what suits the bed at the measuring visit, so you can choose a mattress that works. Most enquiries start with room for a desk and a guest bed and somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Pentonville, and in a flat, bedrooms rarely have space to spare. Fitted furniture can be planned floor to ceiling, so storage goes up rather than out. The furniture is built in sections that fit the route into the flat, then put together in the room.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

From workshop to your room

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturday work is by prior arrangement where the building permits it.

  1. We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there.
  2. We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of, as the bed must be fixed securely.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready to check.
  4. We build and finish everything in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

Before fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Getting a quote

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, message us from the contact page with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Advice

Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

What it is made from

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site, once it is fitted. It’s easy to touch up later.

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

FAQs: wall beds in Pentonville

Does a conservation area in or near Pentonville affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you make wall beds for homes in Pentonville?

Yes, we work across Islington, Pentonville included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.

Is a wall bed safe?

Safety depends on a secure fixing and sensible use. The mechanism is fixed exactly as its maker sets out, and you keep the space in front clear and children away while it moves.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

What affects the price in Pentonville

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How big the furniture is
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What we need to know

Ahead of the design visit, we will normally ask about:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To share them, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Bedroom storage in Pentonville

Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

If you live near Barnard Park, wall beds are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. For families living near St John Evangelist RC Primary School, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. The wider area includes historic houses like Dr Johnson's House, about 1.4 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.
