Wall beds in Angel

A wall bed folds up into a fitted cabinet when you don’t need it and comes down when it’s time to sleep. It means a room can work as more than a bedroom, so a guest room can double as a study or playroom. We build the cabinet around the bed to suit the room and finish it to match. Most enquiries start with a guest room that sits empty most of the time and a bed that looks like cupboards by day; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Bedrooms in flats often share a wall with the next flat or the communal corridor, and that wall could be solid or plasterboard. With purpose-built flats home to most households around Angel, we choose fixings that suit the wall and keep drilling to what’s needed. Tall pieces are fixed back securely.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where there is no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The stair turns and landings set the limit. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.

  1. First, you tell us about the space. Mention who the bed is for.
  2. The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home.

How to prepare

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Tips worth knowing

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Mention if the wall is a stud wall
  • Allow space for pillows and duvets
  • Keep children away while the bed moves
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first

Keep to the mattress size and weight the mechanism allows, as a heavier one can affect how the bed balances. A new mattress should suit the mechanism too.

Check how the cabinet will get into the room. We make the cabinet in sections that fit up the stairs and through the doors, so let us know about narrow stairs or a small lift.

Bedrooms in Angel: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 39% of the housing in the streets around Angel, with about 23% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Angel, Historic England’s list includes Sadler House (Grade II*), under half a mile south, and Wells House (Grade II*), under half a mile south. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. For fitting in Angel, a van typically needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know about parking near your home at the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Dr Johnson's House, about 1.2 miles south. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Close to Barnard Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Questions we are often asked

Do you cover homes near London Kings Cross station?

Yes, homes across Islington and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Angel?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on, so check it or ask your managing agent.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

It’s made in sections. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

Do you supply the mattress?

The mechanism maker sets which mattresses suit the bed by size, depth and weight. We can talk you through what the mechanism allows, so the mattress you choose fits.

What prompts wall beds in Angel

Some people are tired of sofa beds. A wall bed takes a proper mattress, chosen to suit its mechanism, and the bed sits flat on its frame.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:

  • More floor space in a studio flat
  • Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
  • A bed that fills a little-used room
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests

If you live in a period home close to St Mark's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

What wall beds cannot fix

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Structural work to the wall or floor
  • Getting consent under your lease
  • Supplying mattresses

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made wall bed units are available and normally cost less, and they can work in a simple space. They come in set sizes and finishes, so they may not suit uneven walls, low ceilings or alcoves. A bespoke cabinet is built for the room. Ready-made furniture stops at a set height, whatever the ceiling, which wastes the space above. Fitted furniture runs to the ceiling.

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
