Wall beds for homes in Lampton

Many spare rooms are only just big enough for a bed, and the bed fills the room even when no one is staying. When the bed is folded away, the room is open again for a desk, a hobby or just space. When guests come, the bed folds down. Typical reasons to get in touch are a bed that fills a little-used room and shelves or a desk around the bed, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Around Lampton, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic spot for fitted furniture, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Wall beds for homes in Lampton

About 31% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Lampton went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 27% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Lampton include Hounslow Congregational Church (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south, and Osterley Mansions (Grade II), about 0.6 miles east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Hounslow is inside it. Vans bringing furniture to Lampton fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you at the measuring visit.

For a flat near Hounslow station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For an older house near St Luke, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. The wider area includes historic houses like Osterley House, about 1.1 miles north. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Fitting day, step by step

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room. Mention who the bed is for.
  2. The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout.
  3. A written quote is sent to you.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the bed and storage in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

Common questions about wall beds

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Lampton?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hounslow station?

Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

We plan the route in at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

What we don’t do

Not everything around wall beds is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Decorating around the cabinet
  • Building work to make a wall sound
  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish

What affects the cost of wall beds

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How big the furniture is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Before the design visit

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Could you do it yourself?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
