About our wall beds in North Brixton
Spare rooms in London homes are often small, and the bed fills the room even when no one is staying. When the bed is folded away, the room is open again, ready for work, exercise or play. Guests still get a proper bed when they stay. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a study that doubles as a spare room and somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep.
When floor space is tight, the space over the door and above the bed head is often wasted. Since most households around North Brixton live in purpose-built flats, bridging those spaces with fitted cupboards can add a lot of storage. Top cupboards suit things you need only now and then.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Looking after your furniture
New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Plan where chairs and desks will sit
- Keep children away while the bed moves
- Mention if the wall is a stud wall
- Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
If the bed ever feels different when you lower or lift it, stop using it and get in touch. Do not try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.
Measure the space in front of the wall, not just the wall. The bed needs room to fold down, so plan where furniture will sit.
How we price wall beds
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- How big the furniture is
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Spray painting or hand painting
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
Getting in touch
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Wall beds for homes in North Brixton
About 28% of the homes in the neighbourhood around North Brixton went up before 1919, and about 26% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. 20 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central North Brixton. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. A quarter or more of the homes in the streets around North Brixton (about 25%) were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Post-war bedrooms are normally simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, fixed to suit the wall.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St John the Divine, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Close to Max Roach Park? Wall beds are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. If your home is one of the older houses near St Michael's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Flats, conversions and lettings
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.
Your questions about wall beds in North Brixton
Does a conservation area in or near North Brixton affect fitted furniture?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
I live in a flat in North Brixton. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
What finishes do you offer?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
How much does a wall bed cost?
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each wall bed is different, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Can a wall bed go on any wall?
It depends on the wall and floor. The mechanism must be fixed to a sound wall or floor, as its maker specifies, and we look at this when we measure.
How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?
That varies with the size of the bed. At the design visit we measure the room and check there is enough space in front.
How fitting works for wall beds
In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Where there is no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.
- First, you tell us about the room and how you’d like it to work.
- We visit, measure up and check the wall the bed will fix to. We also check there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
- You get a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and any storage around it, for you to look over.
- The bed cabinet and any shelves or desk are made at our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.
Preparing the room
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Ask for a quote
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.
Advice
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
