Southwark Fitted Home Offices
Planning fitted home offices for a home in Southwark? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing, before anything is made.
- Wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day
- A laptop that moves from room to room
- Files and folders piling up
Fitted home offices designed for your room
Caring for painted furniture
Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:
- Look at the window and where the light falls
- Estimate the shelf space you will need
- Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
- Note what sits on and around your desk
Any sockets or wiring are for your electrician, and the furniture leaves room for them. Show them the cable routes so everything lines up. Keeping cables in their routes keeps the desk tidy.
Use the cable routes so wires don’t rub the paint. Tight cables can mark edges over time. Every so often, tidy the cables back into place.
Fitted home offices in Southwark: what you get
We make each home office in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the desk and shelving their strength, and MDF gives the doors and panels a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is brought to your home in Southwark and fitted. If your home has glare from a window on the screen and an awkward space with no furniture that fits, that is what home offices are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Big windows in newer homes bring lots of light, and sometimes glare on a screen, so where the desk faces matters. Many homes around Southwark date from 2000 onwards, and we look at the light at the design visit. Setting the desk at right angles to the window typically helps.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

FAQs: fitted home offices in Southwark
Is parking a problem for fitting in Southwark?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
My home in Southwark is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Home offices are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
How long does it take to fit a home office?
How long fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make the desk and storage in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
What does a built-in desk cost?
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The size of the room, the amount of desk, shelving and storage, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Flats, conversions and lettings
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.
Working from home in Southwark
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Southwark were built since 2000 (about 46%) and before 1919 (about 17%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. There are 171 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Southwark. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Newer homes are more common around Southwark than across the rest of London: about 46% date from 2000 onwards, against about 28%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That makes plasterboard stud walls and compact rooms more likely, which shapes the fixings and sizes.
If you live near Little Dorrit's Playground, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day. If your home is one of the older houses near Borough Welsh Congregational Chapel, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. If you live in a flat close to Elephant & Castle station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

From workshop to your room
In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so it helps to let us know during the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
