Wall Beds in Rotherhithe

Thinking about wall beds in Rotherhithe? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing.

  • A playroom that can sleep visitors
  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time

Wall beds designed for your room

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Wall beds for homes in Rotherhithe

A wall bed needs clear space in front of it to fold down, and that shapes the design. We think about where a chair, rug or desk will go when the bed is down. People normally come to us about storage built around a fold-down bed and a bed that fills a little-used room, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Stud walls in newer homes can carry pipes and cables, so the walls are checked before anything is fixed. Many homes around Rotherhithe date from 2000 onwards, so this check is routine. Tall pieces are tied into the studs, not just the board.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

How fitting day works

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily, and dust is kept to a minimum.

  1. First, you tell us about the space.
  2. The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. You receive a quote in writing, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home.

Starting with a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

A standard bed is simple and needs no mechanism, which is a fair point in its favour. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them day after day. Large standalone pieces don’t always fit the lift or the hallway, while fitted furniture comes in sections sized for the route. The sections are joined and fixed once inside.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Why us?

  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • A design visit, then a quote in writing
  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Made for your room, not a standard size

Flats, leases and landlords

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.

Common questions about wall beds

How do you fit wall beds in a flat in Rotherhithe?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

I live near Canada Water station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?

You need clear floor in front of the cabinet for the bed to fold down, on top of the cabinet’s own depth. We measure this at the measuring visit and plan the layout around it.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Is it time for wall beds?

Others want the bed to be part of a wider storage wall. Cupboards and shelving either side turn one wall into storage, workspace and a bed.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • A proper bed instead of a sofa bed
  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • A flexible room for a growing family

The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 2.1 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight

Wall beds in Rotherhithe: local notes

About 39% of the homes in the area around Rotherhithe went up since 2000, and about 34% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Rotherhithe, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary Rotherhithe (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles west, and The Finnish Church (Grade II), less than half a mile west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

For a family home near Alfred Salter Primary School, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If you live in a flat close to Canada Water station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
