Fitted wardrobes for your home in Tufnell Park

About our fitted wardrobes in Tufnell Park

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. Where a wardrobe goes on an external wall, we plan ventilation behind and inside it to help avoid condensation and mould. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. If you are living with clothes with nowhere proper to go and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes, fitted wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

In a Victorian bedroom, the chimney breast typically sits on a side wall, with a recess to each side. A large share of the homes around Tufnell Park date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Fitted furniture can fill both recesses and bridge the chimney breast with high cupboards, leaving the breast itself clear. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What fitted wardrobes can’t fix

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Fitted wardrobes in Tufnell Park: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 56% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Tufnell Park, with about 15% built between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 38 entries within half a mile of the centre of Tufnell Park. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Purpose-built flats are home to about 47% of households in the neighbourhood around Tufnell Park, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For a flat near Upper Holloway station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Whittington Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Witanhurst, about 1.2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

To be fair, modular wardrobe systems are easy to reconfigure. A bespoke interior is planned around what you own, and adjustable shelves keep some flexibility. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Why us?

  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • A design visit, then a quote in writing
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • Made for your room, not a standard size

Read how bespoke compares with ready-made and what to look for in a quote.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The width and height of the space
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

What to send when you contact us

When you contact us, these help most:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you’re ready, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

How fitting day works

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You send us some details about the room and the storage you need.
  2. We visit to measure the room and discuss the design. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. We send a written quote for the wardrobes.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
  5. We fit them in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls.

How to prepare

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Ask for a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Tufnell Park

My home in Tufnell Park is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Is Tufnell Park in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes. Tufnell Park is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Islington and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense, and in a roomier space hinged doors give easier access. We will look at the room with you during the design visit.

Is it possible to have storage over the bed?

Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that is often wasted and can include bedside shelves. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it is useful to be around at the end.
