About our wall beds in Tulse Hill
A wall bed folds up into a fitted cabinet when you don’t need it and is lowered again at night. It lets one room do two jobs, so a guest room can double as a study or playroom. We build the cabinet around the bed to suit the room and paint it in a colour you choose. We make wall beds from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a proper bed instead of a sofa bed and a hobby room with a bed for guests.
A large share of the homes around Tulse Hill were built before 1919, and bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast with an alcove either side. Fitted storage can sit in the alcoves or span the wall, chimney breast and all. Because older floors slope and walls bow, everything is scribed and levelled on site.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Pricing wall beds in Tulse Hill
Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- The overall size of the piece
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.
Helping us understand the room
Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you contact us, it’s useful to send:
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- How you want to use the space
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, use our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Is it time for wall beds?
In a studio or a small flat, every bit of floor counts. With the bed away, the main room is a living space again until bedtime.
Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:
- A hobby room with a bed for guests
- A living room with a bed that folds away
- A storage wall with a bed inside
- A real mattress for visitors
For a family home near St Martin-In-The-Fields High School for Girls, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.
Choosing a carpenter
- Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Where they’ll park and unload
Honest limits
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Making good the walls after other work
- Advice on your lease
- Strengthening or rebuilding a wall
If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.
What it’s made from

Bedrooms in Tulse Hill: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 46% of the housing in the streets around Tulse Hill, with about 23% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Tulse Hill, as it does anywhere else in London. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.
For a flat near Tulse Hill station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 1.6 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

How fitting day works
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You let us know about the room and who the bed is for.
- At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor.
- We send a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and storage.
- The bed housing and any shelves are made at our workshop.
- Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts. We show you how the bed works before we leave.

Related advice
Questions we are often asked
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Tulse Hill?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
My home in Tulse Hill is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Wall beds are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
How much space does a wall bed need?
The bed needs room in front of it to come down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We check the space when we measure and plan the layout around it.
