Wall beds in Clapham Park: what you get

The bed mechanism must be fixed securely, exactly as its maker specifies, into a wall or floor that is sound enough to hold it. At the design visit we look at the wall it will go on as solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are room for a desk and a guest bed and hiding the bed when it’s not in use.

Older bedrooms typically have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of homes around Clapham Park are that old. Fitted furniture can run right up to the ceiling or the cornice, with high storage for the things you use least. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

From workshop to your room

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You contact us about a wall bed for a spare room or studio.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, from the front door to the room itself. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The cabinet is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Arranging a design visit

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

Flats, leases and landlords

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases.

What it costs

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • How big the furniture is
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What to send when you get in touch

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Bedrooms in Clapham Park: local notes

About 47% of the homes in the area around Clapham Park went up before 1919, and about 21% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Clapham Park is within about a quarter of a mile of the Abbeville Road Conservation Area. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in Clapham Park, let us know during the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Carlyle's House, about 2.6 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. For a family home near Glenbrook Primary School, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If you live in a flat close to Clapham High Street station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Clapham Park is about 1 mile north-east of Stockwell, within the London Borough of Lambeth. Whether your home in Clapham Park is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Our Lambeth coverage includes Clapham Park and the places around it.

Why bespoke in Clapham Park?

A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, and that has its appeal. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them day after day. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Why us?

What we do not do

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • Supplying mattresses
  • Decorating around the cabinet

Questions we’re often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Clapham High Street station?

Yes, homes across Lambeth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.

Can you make wall beds for a home in Clapham Park?

Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London, and Clapham Park is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We will design around them.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We go through the mechanism’s limits when we measure, so you can pick the right one.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on, so check it or ask your managing agent.
