Wall beds for your home in Streatham Hill
About our wall beds in Streatham Hill
A home office that doubles as a guest room is a common request. We can design a wall with a fold-down bed and a desk or shelving around it, so the bed does not dominate the working day. Cable routes for the desk can be planned in, though any new sockets are for your electrician. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about hiding the bed when it’s not in use and somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep.
Where the window, radiator and door sit decides most of a bedroom layout. Whatever kind of home you have in Streatham Hill, we start there, then plan fitted furniture on the walls that are left. Furniture is kept clear of radiators so the room stays warm.
You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Questions we’re often asked
How do you fit wall beds in a flat in Streatham Hill?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Wall beds are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
Can you build shelves or a desk around a wall bed?
Yes, and it’s one of the best ways to use the wall. Shelves and cupboards around the bed make the most of the space, and any new sockets are for your electrician.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.

How fitting works for wall beds
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so let us know what applies at the measuring visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
- At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
- You receive a written quote for the wall bed and any storage.
- We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
- We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.
How to prepare
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Getting a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Related advice
Flats, leases and landlords
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Wall beds in Streatham Hill: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Streatham Hill were built before 1919 (about 36%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Streatham Hill, 9 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 21% of households in the area around Streatham Hill live in flats in converted or shared houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Margaret, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. Kingswood House, about 1.9 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. If you live near Streatham Common, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Looking after your furniture
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
- Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
- Check mattress size and weight limits
- Let us know about the wall’s construction
Before you first use the bed, read the mechanism maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it. Lower it steadily and keep the space in front clear, with children kept well back while it moves.
If you know the wall’s construction, mention it. The fixing depends on the wall, and we check it at the design visit too.
How it is made
Birch plywood
For a sturdy cabinet, birch plywood is a good choice for a piece that moves every day.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.
Where other trades come in
Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:
- Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
- New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
- Structural work to the wall or floor
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
