Your questions about window seats in Aldwych

Can you fit furniture in a home close to London Charing Cross station?

Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

My home in Aldwych is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

What materials do you use for window seats?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The frame and seat top are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, and MDF takes paint well for the fronts and grilles. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Window seats in Aldwych

Plenty of period homes across London have sash windows. A seat beneath one needs to sit below the cill so the window still opens and closes easily. If the window has shutters, the seat is planned so they can still open fully. We check all of this during the design visit in Aldwych. Typical reasons to get in touch are no space for toys and games and a sash window with space beneath it going to waste, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Where original shutters, doors or panelling survive, they’re worth designing around. With a large share of the homes around Aldwych built before 1919, new storage can be made to sit beside them rather than replace them. Door styles can be chosen to suit the age of the house. For a listed home, fixing into original joinery can need consent, so check first.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

When is bespoke worth it?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Aldwych homes and window seats

In the streets around Aldwych, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 48%) and the years since 2000 (about 22%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for window seats, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 725 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Aldwych. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and window seats can be designed to work around them. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Westminster included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Aldwych is covered by it. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Mary Le Strand, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. The wider area includes historic houses such as Dr Johnson's House, about 0.4 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly. For families living near St Clement Danes CofE Primary School, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Aldwych is part of the City of Westminster, about 2 miles west of City of Westminster. We can visit homes in Aldwych on weekdays, or on a Saturday by arrangement. Across Westminster, we cover Aldwych and the places around it.

Every home in W1D, WC2H and W1F is covered for window seats. Whether you live on a street like Shoe Lane, Drury Lane and New Square or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for window seats. Aldwych sits close to the A4 and A301. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the measuring visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Neighbouring places we cover for window seats include Clare Market (1 mile north), Covent Garden (1 mile west), Temple Bar (1 mile east), Temple (1 mile east) and Adelphi (1 mile south-west). Other parts of Westminster we cover include City of Westminster (2 miles west), Victoria (2 miles south-west), Paddington Green (3 miles west), Paddington (2 miles west), Connaught Village (2 miles west) and Belgravia (2 miles south-west).

Is bespoke worth it?

A ready-made bench is built for a flat wall and a square corner, but bays have angled sides and walls that are rarely flat. In a bay, a standard bench leaves tricky gaps. A bespoke seat follows the shape of the bay. It costs more than a bench, and what you get is a seat that belongs to the room. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines.

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Why choose us

  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Designed for the room you have
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • We work across all London boroughs

See our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf and what a quote should include.

How we price window seats

What you pay depends on:

  • The internal fittings
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How big the furniture is
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Helping us understand the room

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, use our contact form.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising during the design visit.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the design visit.

How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch about a window seat.
  2. At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish written in.
  4. The seat is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The seat is fitted and scribed, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Give new paintwork gentle use while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Before fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
