Adelphi Window Seats

We make window seats for homes in Adelphi, designed around the room you have. We design your window seat at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator
  • A ready-made bench that does not fit the bay
  • A recess under the window doing nothing

Window seats in Adelphi: what you get

Cushions are not something we supply, so we agree the seat size with you and you can have one made to fit. That leaves the choice of fabric and style to you. We make the seat to suit the cushion you plan, with a suitable depth and height. We make window seats from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a period room that needs furniture to suit it and no comfortable place to sit in the light.

Without a loft, a flat’s storage has to come from the hall, the recesses and the rooms. With most households around Adelphi in purpose-built flats, that’s often the starting point. Shallow cupboards and seats with storage add a lot without taking much floor.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What it costs

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How big the furniture is

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Helping us understand the room

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you contact us, it’s useful to send:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • How you want to use the space

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

How fitting day works

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and some buildings set hours for noisy work. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the window, and whether a radiator sits beneath it.
  2. At the design visit we measure the window and the radiator, and plan a grille or open front so heat isn’t trapped.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the seat and the grille.
  4. In our workshop the seat is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the grille made to match.
  5. We fit it in your home and scribe it to the walls, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

Ask for a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

FAQs: window seats in Adelphi

Is parking a problem for fitting in Adelphi?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Can you make window seats for a home in Adelphi?

Yes, Adelphi is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Westminster and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

How long will the window seat fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We make the seat in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.

Window seats in Adelphi: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Adelphi were built before 1919 (about 41%) and since 2000 (about 26%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Adelphi, 38 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Westminster is inside it. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Adelphi is covered by it. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

For a family home near St Clement Danes CofE Primary School, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. For a flat near London Charing Cross station, window seats are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Victoria Embankment Gardens, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place.

Caring for painted furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Choose a colour that suits the room
  • Let us know about parking at the measuring visit
  • Move furniture away from the window so we can measure
  • Decide whether you’d like a lid, drawers or both

In winter, windows can run with condensation, so keep the area behind the seat dry. A little ventilation helps keep things dry. If anything isn’t right with the seat, message us from the contact page and we’ll talk it through.

Every so often, look at the hinges and any handles. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If a lid or drawer starts to catch, tell us about the room on our contact form and describe what’s happening.

Why bespoke in Adelphi?

A standalone bench can be moved, which is useful if you rent or plan to move soon. Fitted seats stay with the house, and they make more of the window. Which suits you depends on your plans. Ready-made units can’t follow the boxing and risers found in many flats, so it ends up with gaps or blocks access. Fitted furniture is built around them.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters. The seat and its frame are made from it, as they carry weight daily. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Doors and drawer fronts

What shows of the seat is mainly its fronts. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. A radiator grille can be built into the front.
