How we make window seats for Brentford End

A radiator under the window is common, and a seat has to work with it. A seat built over a radiator needs a grille or an open front, so the heat is not trapped. The front of the seat includes a grille, with space left around the radiator. We’ll look at your radiator at the measuring visit in Brentford End. If you are living with a room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat and off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window, that is what window seats are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A good part of the housing around Brentford End is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Fitting day, step by step

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the bay or sash window is enough.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out how warm air from the radiator will reach the room.
  3. Your written quote sets out the seat, the grille, the materials and the finish.
  4. In our workshop the seat is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the grille made to match.
  5. The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

How to get a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, use our contact form.

Questions from Brentford End

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Brentford End?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

I live near Syon Lane station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Which is better under a window seat, a lid or drawers?

The answer depends on what goes under the seat. A lift-up lid opens the full depth, which suits bulky things you don’t need every day, while drawers are easier with a cushion on top.

How long will the window seat fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is built in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We work tidily and keep the room as clear as possible.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases.

What prompts window seats in Brentford End

Most people simply want to use the window. Bays are hard to furnish, and a built-in seat makes good use of them. It becomes a place to sit, read or look out.

Window seats can help with:

  • A recess under the window doing nothing
  • A ready-made bench that does not fit the bay
  • Wanting a quiet place to read
  • A bay with no furniture that fits

If your children go to The Green School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Pricing window seats in Brentford End

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How big the furniture is
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What we need to know

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Could you do it yourself?

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
