Spring Grove Window Seats

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on window seats in Spring Grove starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books
  • An empty bay that does not get used
  • Unused space below a sash window

Window seats for your home in Spring Grove

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf benches are made for straight walls and square corners, and bay windows rarely offer either. A bench in a bay leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space at the corners. A seat made for the window follows every angle. It is a bigger investment, and the gain is a seat that fits the space. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Window seats for homes in Spring Grove

A window seat can be part of a larger piece of furniture. Shelving on each side, with the seat in the middle, makes a natural reading spot. We design the seat and the surrounding units together, so the whole wall looks considered. We can discuss the options when we visit in Spring Grove. If you are living with a nursery or bedroom short of storage and a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay, that’s what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Spring Grove, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the window, and whether a radiator sits beneath it.
  2. At the design visit we measure the window and the radiator, and plan a grille or open front so heat is not trapped.
  3. Your written quote sets out the seat, the grille, the materials and the finish.
  4. In our workshop the seat is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the grille made to match.
  5. The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.

Common questions about window seats

Is parking a problem for fitting in Spring Grove?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you make window seats for a home in Spring Grove?

Yes, we work across Hounslow, Spring Grove included, and across the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.

Making use of awkward spaces in Spring Grove

About 34% of the homes in the area around Spring Grove went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 24% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Spring Grove include Summer House (Grade II), under half a mile south, and Lancaster House (Grade II), less than half a mile east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Spring Grove. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Osterley House, about 0.7 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly. If you live in a period home close to St Mary's Church, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear. Close to Inwood Park? Window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Flats, leases and landlords

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.

Materials and finishes

Pull-out drawers

With drawers, you don’t need to move the cushion to reach your things. They’re ideal for everyday items. Each drawer is sized for the space.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is smooth and even. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before the seat comes to you. The colour is agreed with you.
