Window Seats in Northfields
Window seats in Northfields: window seats for bays and under sash windows, with storage inside. We visit to measure and discuss the design, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it.
- A nursery or bedroom short of storage
- A bay window that is hard to furnish
- Nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books
Window seats for your home in Northfields
Window seats in Northfields
Sash windows are a feature of many older London homes. Under a sash, the seat is set below the cill so the window can still be used. If the window has shutters, the seat is planned so they can still open fully. These details are measured when we visit your home in Northfields. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are no comfortable place to sit in the light and a radiator under the window getting in the way.
Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are typically solid brick, which can be cold, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. A large share of the homes around Northfields date from then. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
What happens on fitting day
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.
- You get in touch and let us know about the window, and whether a radiator sits beneath it.
- We visit to measure up and work out how warm air from the radiator will reach the room.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the seat and the grille.
- We make the seat and grille in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.
How to prepare
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
How to get a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Flats, leases and landlords
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Window seats in Northfields: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Northfields were built before 1919 (about 63%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 19%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 13 entries within half a mile of the centre of Northfields. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Ealing sets its own rules. Where a street in Northfields is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Tell us what the parking is like during the design visit.
If you live near Lammas Park, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. Near listed buildings like Boston Manor House, about 0.5 miles south of the centre of Northfields, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a family home near Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.
Northfields is about 1 mile north of Ealing, part of the London Borough of Ealing. Anywhere in Northfields, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our Ealing coverage includes Northfields, along with the rest of the borough.
Every home in W5, W13 and TW8 is covered for window seats. If your home is on a street like Burns Road, South Road and Elers Road, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for window seats. Northfields sits close to the A3002. If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. We also cover the places around Northfields: Brentford (1 mile south-east), Gillette Corner (1 mile south-west), Brentford End (1 mile south), Osterley (2 miles south-west) and Spring Grove (2 miles south-west). Elsewhere in Ealing, we also cover Acton (2 miles east), Southall (3 miles west), Greenford (3 miles north-west), Northolt (4 miles north-west), Acton Green (2 miles east) and Bedford Park (2 miles east).

How we price window seats
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Spray painting or hand painting
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
Helping us understand the room
A few details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it’s useful to send:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Questions we are often asked
Do you cover homes near Brentford station?
Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.
Is Northfields in the area you cover for window seats?
Yes, Northfields is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Ealing and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.
Is it possible to have a window seat above a radiator?
Yes. The seat has a grille or open front, so the warmth can reach the room. Space is left around the radiator too. Moving the radiator is for your plumber, if you’d prefer it elsewhere.
How is a window seat priced?
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The shape of the window, the mix of drawers and lids, and any grille all play a part. We set it all out in a written quote.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
A standalone bench can be moved, which is useful if you rent or plan to move soon. A fitted seat is designed to stay, and it uses the space in a way a standalone piece can’t. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
