Window Seats in Isle of Dogs
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on window seats in Isle of Dogs starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- An empty bay that doesn’t get used
- No space for toys and games
- A period room that needs furniture to suit it
Window seats for your home in Isle of Dogs
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf benches are made for straight walls and square corners, but bays have angled sides and walls that are rarely flat. In a bay, a standard bench leaves tricky gaps. A bespoke seat follows the shape of the bay. It is a bigger investment, and the gain is a seat that fits the space. Large off-the-shelf pieces can make a small room feel smaller, whereas fitted pieces painted to suit the walls sit back into the space.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, then set it out in the quote.

Window seats for homes in Isle of Dogs
Many windows have a radiator beneath them. A seat built over a radiator needs a grille or an open front, so the heat isn’t trapped. The front of the seat includes a grille, with space left around the radiator. When we visit in Isle of Dogs, we will check the radiator and plan around it. If your home has wanting a seat without blocking the radiator and a child’s room that needs storage and seating, that is what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
A large number of homes around Isle of Dogs date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes often have little built-in storage. Fitted storage can turn a hallway recess, a landing or the space under the stairs into somewhere useful. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on timber or metal studs, so the fixings are chosen for that.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

How fitting day works
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so we protect the route before carrying anything in. Door frames and corners get covers too. The sections are assembled in the room.
- It starts when you contact us about a window seat. Say how you’d like to use it, if you know.
- We visit to measure and talk about how you’ll use the seat. Shutters and cills are noted too.
- A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed.
- Your window seat is made in our workshop, shaped to the window.
- The seat is fitted and set level, ready for a cushion.
How to prepare
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Making use of tricky spaces in Isle of Dogs
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Isle of Dogs were built since 2000 (about 52%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 24%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List has 20 entries within half a mile of the centre of Isle of Dogs. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and window seats can be designed to work around them. About 52% of homes in the area around Isle of Dogs were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Newer homes often have little built-in storage, and their walls are usually plasterboard on studs, so window seats are designed with fixings to suit.
For a family home near Harbinger Primary School, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 0.8 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly. If you live near Mudchute Park and Farm, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Your questions about window seats in Isle of Dogs
I live near Greenwich station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
How do you fit window seats in a flat in Isle of Dogs?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Window seats are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Is it possible to have a window seat above a radiator?
Yes. A radiator under the window is common, and the seat is designed to work with it. The front includes a grille so the radiator keeps working. Storage above a radiator stays warm, so it suits things that do not mind that.
Will a window seat work below a sash window?
Yes. We set the seat below the cill, so the sash still works. Where there are shutters, the seat is planned so they still open fully. These details are measured when we visit.
Looking after your furniture
Looking after painted furniture is simple. These habits help most:
- Note the position of any radiator and its pipes
- Clear the bay or window area before the design visit
- Tell us about parking at the measuring visit
- Plan the cushion early so the seat suits it
We open each lid and drawer with you before we go. Any grille is checked so the radiator can still warm the room. You will know it all works as it should.
Avoid standing on the seat to reach the window or curtains. The seat is made for sitting, and standing puts weight in one spot. A little care keeps it looking good.
Boards, parts and paint
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done in your home after fitting. It is easy to touch up if it gets marked. It suits a seat that sees daily use.
Doors and drawer fronts
We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Panels can suit the shutters or doors in an older room. The gaps are kept even all along.
