Window seats in Crofton Park, Lewisham
Thinking about window seats in Crofton Park? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote.

Window seats in Crofton Park: what you get
We make the seat itself, and you can source a cushion to the size we give you. You can then choose the fabric and style yourself. We make the seat to suit the cushion you plan, with a suitable depth and height. If you are living with unused space below a sash window and wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room, that’s what window seats are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of homes around Crofton Park are that old. Window seats are scribed to the walls and levelled on site so doors, lids and drawers run true. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly, and the paint colour is agreed with you.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Could you do it yourself?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
What we do not do
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Plumbing work on the radiator under the window
- Making the seat cushion, which isn’t our work
- Painting the walls of the bay
If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Doors and drawer fronts
Fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. Panelled fronts can echo the woodwork in a period room. The lines are kept neat and even.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF can be cut cleanly, which suits the angled panels of a bay and the pattern of a grille. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. It forms most of the visible parts.
From workshop to your room
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- First we hear about your bay or window and what you’d like.
- We measure the window, the cill and any radiator or shutters.
- The design is agreed and a written quote follows.
- The seat is made in our workshop and painted in your colour.
- We fit it in your home and check every lid and drawer with you. A radiator grille, if there is one, lets the heat through.
Before fitting day
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
Arranging a design visit
We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Advice
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
One advantage of a standalone bench is that it can go with you. A fitted seat is designed to stay, and it uses the space in a way a standalone piece cannot. Which suits you depends on your plans. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.
We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

FAQs: window seats in Crofton Park
My house in Crofton Park is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Crofton Park station?
Yes, homes across Lewisham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Can you build a seat beneath sash windows?
Yes. Sash windows are a natural place for a seat in many period homes. The cill height and any shutters are measured carefully, so the seat fits without getting in the way of the window. Repairs to the window itself aren’t our work.
Crofton Park homes and window seats
About 57% of the homes in the area around Crofton Park went up before 1919, and about 12% between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Crofton Park, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Hilda (Grade II), under half a mile west, and Church Hall of St Hilda's (Grade II), under half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. For fitting in Crofton Park, a van usually needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know about parking near your home at the measuring visit.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 2.4 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat. Living in a block of flats near Crofton Park station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. Close to Blythe Hill Fields? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place.
