FAQs: window seats in Osterley
I live near Isleworth station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can you make window seats for a home in Osterley?
Yes. Osterley is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hounslow and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.
Which materials go into your window seats?
The seat is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The frame and seat top are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the fronts and grilles are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
How much does a window seat cost?
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A bay with angled sides involves more work than a straight recess, and drawers more than a lid. We set it all out in a quote in writing.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.
About our window seats in Osterley
We make the seat itself, and you can source a cushion to the size we give you. That leaves the choice of fabric and style to you. We make the seat to suit the cushion you plan, with a suitable depth and height. We make window seats from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about looking for a reading spot by the window and a bay window that’s hard to furnish.
A good part of the housing around Osterley is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Before and after fitting day
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Tell us about parking at the design visit
- Decide whether you’d like a lid, drawers or both
- Clear the bay or window area before the design visit
- Let us know about the radiator before we visit
Once the seat is fitted, it is ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep heavy objects and sharp edges off the fresh paint.
Avoid standing on the seat to reach the window or curtains. The seat is made for sitting, and standing puts weight in one spot. It will look better for longer with a little care.
Flats, conversions and lettings
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
How it’s made
Moisture-resistant MDF
Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for angled panels and radiator grilles. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. Most of what you see on the finished seat is MDF.
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting gives the seat a very even surface. It is applied in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.
Osterley homes and window seats
About 53% of the homes in the streets around Osterley went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 15% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Osterley include Osterley House (Grade I), under half a mile north, and Osterley House Stables (Grade I), under half a mile north. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. All of London, Hounslow included, is inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Osterley is covered by it. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.
If you live near Inwood Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place. If you live in a flat close to Isleworth station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For an older house near St Mary's Church, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.
Osterley is about 1 mile south of Hounslow, in the London Borough of Hounslow. From period terraces to newer flats in Osterley, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Osterley is one of 25 places on our list for Hounslow.
Design visits and fitting in TW7, TW3 and TW5 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If your home is on a street such as Jersey Road, Church Road and Gresham Road, or close by, we can visit to measure up for window seats. Close by, we also work in Spring Grove (1 mile south-east), Lampton (1 mile south-west), Norwood Green (1 mile north-west), Gillette Corner (1 mile east) and Woodlands (1 mile south). We also make window seats in nearby places like Feltham (4 miles south-west), Brentford (2 miles east), Chiswick (4 miles east), Strand-on-the-Green (3 miles east), Gunnersbury (3 miles east) and Hounslow West (2 miles south-west).
What’s near Osterley
Around Osterley, we cover homes near Spring Grove Primary School and The Plough Public House, among other places. The nearest railway station is Isleworth station, roughly 0.9 miles south-east of the centre. A little further out are West Middlesex University Hospital (1.3 miles south-east) and Treaty Centre (1.3 miles south-west). For a walk, there is Garden Lake and Long Wood.
What we do not do
Not everything around window seats is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Any change to radiator pipes, which needs a plumber
- Electrical work around the seat
- Making the seat cushion, which isn’t our work
Not sure whether your space suits window seats? You can message us from the contact page and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.
Boards, parts and finishes
- Hand-painted finish
- Spray-painted finish
- Radiator grilles
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Lift-up lids or drawers
From workshop to your room
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- First you tell us about the bay or window where you’d like a seat.
- At the design visit we measure the bay or recess and check the radiator, cill and any shutters. We also talk about lift-up lids or drawers.
- We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish.
- We make the seat, the lids or drawers and any grille in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The seat is fitted in your home and checked so the lids and drawers run well. Any radiator grille is fitted so heat can still reach the room.
How to prepare
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Keep pets in another room while we work
