About our window seats in Hackney Wick

Cushions aren’t something we supply, so we agree the seat size with you and you can have one made to fit. You can then choose the fabric and style yourself. We make the seat to suit the cushion you plan, with a suitable depth and height. If you’re living with wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room and a recess under the window doing nothing, that is what window seats are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Hallways in newer flats and houses are often short, with doors opening off every side, which leaves little wall for storage. Around Hackney Wick, many homes were built since 2000, so that is worth planning for. Even a shallow run can hold coats and shoes without crowding the doors.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Flats, leases and landlords

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising during the design visit.

Questions from Hackney Wick

Do you cover homes near Hackney Wick station?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having window seats fitted in Hackney Wick?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Is a lid or drawers better for a window seat?

Often a mix works best. Drawers are easier for daily use, and a lid section holds larger things. For children’s rooms, drawers are normally easier to manage. We talk it through when we visit.

What is a window seat made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the frame and seat, while the fronts and grilles are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Can you fit a window seat under a sash window?

Yes. The seat is set below the cill so the window can still open and close. If there are working shutters, we leave room for them to fold back. We check all of this at the design visit.

Caring for painted furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:

  • Clear the bay or window area before the design visit
  • Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
  • Check whether there is a radiator under the window
  • Check the shutters so the seat can leave room for them

Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. It’s worth keeping a record of the paint colour. Spray-painted surfaces wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth.

Every so often, look at the hinges and any handles. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If a lid or drawer starts to catch, tell us about the room on our contact form and describe what’s happening.

From workshop to your room

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Stud walls can carry pipes and cables, so we check before drilling, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing, ideally before fitting day.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the bay or recess.
  2. At the design visit we measure each side of the bay, because walls in older houses are rarely square.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we make each section of the seat from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the seat is set level and scribed to follow the walls and floor, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Bespoke window seats or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf benches are made for straight walls and square corners, and bay windows rarely offer either. In a bay, a standard bench leaves tricky gaps. A bespoke seat follows the shape of the bay. It costs more than a bench, and what you get is a seat that belongs to the room. Newer homes often have compact rooms where standard furniture leaves awkward gaps, while fitted furniture is made to the room. It works around service boxing too.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Why choose us

  • We visit, measure and discuss the design before we quote
