Window seats designed for your room

About our window seats in Shadwell

A seat under a bedroom or nursery window can store toys, bedding or books. Drawers or a lift-up lid turn it into storage as well as seating. Drawers can be easier than a lid for children to use. In Shadwell, the design visit is where the details are settled. If your home has no comfortable place to sit in the light and a room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat, that is what window seats are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a block, the lift, the corridors and the door to the flat set the size of each section. Most households around Shadwell live in purpose-built flats, so the sections for window seats are planned at the measuring visit. Floors in the corridor and the flat are covered on the way in.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking near blocks of flats can be limited, and loading may need planning, so details of bays, permits or a loading area help. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch about a window seat.
  2. At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
  4. The seat is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The seat is fitted and scribed, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Fresh paint takes a while to cure, so go gently with the seat and lids at first.

How to get a quote

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit. To arrange it, use our contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Boards, parts and paint

Lift-up lids

A lid can run the full width of the seat or be split into sections. Sections are lighter to lift and easier to handle. The design visit is where we agree the layout.

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. It is applied in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.

Window seats for homes in Shadwell

Homes built between 1973 and 1999 make up about 35% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Shadwell, with about 28% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Shadwell include Church of St Peter (Grade I), about 0.5 miles west, and Church of St George in the East (Grade I), about 0.6 miles west. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. In Shadwell, a van will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. We ask about parking at the design visit, so the van can be planned for.

If you live near Russia Dock Woodland, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If you live in a flat close to Wapping station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For families living near Peter Hills with St Mary's and St Paul's CofE Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Shadwell is about 1 mile north-west of Whitechapel, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Design visits and fitting in Shadwell can be on a Saturday, by arrangement. Our work takes in places right across Tower Hamlets.

Every home in SE16, E1 and E1W is covered for window seats, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Whether you live on a street such as Swan Road, Thame Road and Brunel Road or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for window seats. Shadwell sits close to the A101 and A126. Flats, blocks and rented homes

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.

Before and after fitting day

Getting the most from window seats starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Tell us about parking at the measuring visit
  • Note the position of any radiator and its pipes
  • Consider how often you’ll reach for what’s stored
  • Check the shutters so the seat can leave room for them

Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. Keep a note of the colour for later. A spray-painted finish is smooth and even, and small marks often wipe off with a damp cloth.

Do not block the grille with cushions or things stored in front of it. Keeping it clear helps the radiator work as it should. Things stored near a radiator stay warm, so choose what goes there with that in mind.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Your questions about window seats in Shadwell

I live near Wapping station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How do you fit window seats in a flat in Shadwell?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What is a window seat made from?

The seat is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The frame and seat top are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, and MDF takes paint well for the fronts and grilles. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not usually. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
