Our window seats across Tower Hamlets

A seat under a bedroom or nursery window can store toys, bedding or books. Drawers or a lift-up lid turn it into storage as well as seating. For children’s rooms, drawers are often easier for small hands than a heavy lid. In Tower Hamlets, the design visit is where the details are settled. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a child’s room that needs storage and seating and wanting a quiet place to read.

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You contact us with some details about the bay or recess.
  2. We visit to measure the angles of the bay and the floor, and talk through the design.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the angles we measured.
  5. We fit the seat in your home, trimming the edges to meet the walls and cill.

How our quotes work

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Ask for a quote

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Window seats for homes across Tower Hamlets

Older homes in Tower Hamlets often hide useful space behind tricky shapes. A stair void, a bay or an eaves slope can all take window seats built to their exact angles. Everything is scribed and levelled on site.

In Tower Hamlets, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 45%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 20%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 45% of homes in Tower Hamlets were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Homes built since 2000 rarely have much storage, and they tend to have stud walls, so window seats are designed with fixings to suit. About 81% of households in Tower Hamlets live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping, so access to homes in Tower Hamlets is planned ahead of time.

Whitechapel: For an older house near St Mary Matfelon, window seats can be scribed to follow a bay that is rarely square. Living in a block of flats near Whitechapel station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Standard storage benches come in set sizes. A seat made for your window can use the full width and depth of the bay or recess, with drawers, a lift-up lid or a mix below.

What to check before you book

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the design visit.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

Practical tips

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Consider how often you’ll reach for what’s stored
  • Tell us about the radiator before we visit
  • Make sure any shutters still open fully
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls

In winter, windows can run with condensation, so keep the area behind the seat dry. Opening the window for a while helps. If anything isn’t right with the seat, send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll talk it through.

Keep the radiator grille clear so the heat can reach the room. Keeping it clear helps the radiator work as it should. Storage over a radiator stays warm, so it is best for things that don’t mind it.

How we price window seats

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • The internal fittings
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking near your home
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Helping us understand the room

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Your questions about window seats in Tower Hamlets

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Should I choose a lift-up lid or drawers?

Often a mix works best. Drawers suit things you use often, and a lid suits bulky items. In a child’s room, drawers tend to be simpler for small hands. We will suggest a layout at the measuring visit.

What materials do you use for window seats?

The seat is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the frame and seat, and MDF takes paint well for the fronts and grilles. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Can you build a window seat over a radiator?

Yes. Many windows have a radiator beneath, and we design the seat around it. The front includes a grille so the radiator keeps working. Anything stored over the radiator will stay warm, so we plan the storage with that in mind.

What happens during the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
