How we make bespoke kitchens for Isle of Dogs

Kitchens in period houses bring their own challenges. Walls lean, corners aren’t square and floors slope, which shows up quickly along a run of cabinets. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth giving a level line for the worktop you choose. We make kitchens from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are making the most of a galley kitchen and a kitchen island with room around it.

Single-wall kitchens are common in newer open-plan homes. Many homes around Isle of Dogs were built since 2000, so tall cupboards and wall cabinets to the ceiling are worth considering. The worktop, sink and appliances are your choice.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Stud walls can carry pipes and cables, so we check before drilling, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing, ideally before fitting day.

  1. First, you let us know about the room.
  2. We visit, measure and go through the layout, larder, dresser or island, where space allows.
  3. A written quote is sent to you, setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics. It helps to have those trades booked in good time.

Before fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Advice

Boards, parts and paint

Larder and dresser units

We build larders with shelves, drawers and door racks, sized to what you store.

Birch plywood

Long kitchen shelves can sag under plates and jars, and birch plywood helps.

What bespoke kitchens can’t fix

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Electrics, sockets and lighting (your electrician)
  • Structural changes to the room
  • Painting the walls around the kitchen

Not sure whether your space suits bespoke kitchens? You can get in touch through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Larders and dressers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Islands where space allows

What prompts bespoke kitchens in Isle of Dogs

A painted kitchen can be refreshed later, which suits a long-term home. Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up over the years.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • Open shelves with cupboards below
  • Spaces sized for your oven and fridge
  • Room for everything in the kitchen
  • A painted kitchen in a colour you choose

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Nicholas, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.

What to check before you book

  • How parking will work on your street
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.

Questions we’re often asked

Is Isle of Dogs in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?

Yes, we work across Tower Hamlets, Isle of Dogs included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

Getting it in is planned during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Which worktops and appliances can I have?

We plan the kitchen around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose. It helps to choose them before the design is final, and the quote confirms what’s included.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
