How we make fitted home offices for Isle of Dogs

Planning the cables early is what keeps a home office tidy. We design routes through the desk and units for chargers, screens and printers. If you need new sockets, they’re for your electrician, and we plan the furniture around them. We look at the sockets when we visit in Isle of Dogs. If your home has shelves that sag under books and files and a desk in the wrong light, that is what home offices are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Big windows in newer homes bring plenty of light, and sometimes glare on a screen, so where the desk faces matters. Around Isle of Dogs, many homes were built since 2000, and we look at the light at the measuring visit. Setting the desk at right angles to the window usually helps.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Isle of Dogs

I live in a flat in Isle of Dogs. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Isle of Dogs?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can a desk be fitted into an alcove?

Often, yes. An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a desk with shelves above. It is scribed to the alcove walls so it fits closely. We’ll check the size at the measuring visit.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough measurements. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

How fitting day works

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so it helps to sort them out ahead of time. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. You contact us about a home office in a spare room, alcove, landing or under the eaves.
  2. We visit to measure the space, including any slope, alcove or uneven wall.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the office in your home, trimming the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once everything is in.

Fitted home offices for homes in Isle of Dogs

In the area around Isle of Dogs, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 52%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 24%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Isle of Dogs is in the Chapel House Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in Isle of Dogs, let us know at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Nicholas, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Greenwich station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It suits doors, drawer fronts and panels, where a smooth, even finish matters.

Pull-out drawers

We make the drawer boxes from birch plywood for strength. They carry papers, files and equipment. The fronts match the rest of the office.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

The problems fitted home offices solve

Some homes have an awkward space that could become an office. Off-the-shelf desks rarely fit these spaces. A desk made for the space puts it to good use.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Glare from a window on the screen
  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
  • Working at the kitchen table
  • A room with two jobs to do

If your children go to Harbinger Primary School or a school nearby, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

Why bespoke in Isle of Dogs?

If you only need a simple desk against a straight wall, an off-the-shelf desk may be enough. A fitted office earns its place where the space is tricky or the storage matters. At the design visit, we will tell you honestly which approach suits your room. Off-the-shelf depths can crowd a compact new-build room, whereas fitted pieces can be as shallow as the space needs. It still uses the full height.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
