Boards, parts and paint

Doors and drawer fronts

Fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. Panels can suit the shutters or doors in an older room. The lines are kept neat and even.

Lift-up lids

Lids can be made in one piece or in sections. Sections are lighter to lift and easier to handle. The design visit is where we agree the layout.

How we make window seats for London Docklands

A window seat can hide a surprising amount of storage. A lift-up lid is simple and gives access to the full depth, while drawers mean you do not have to move a cushion to reach things. At the design visit in London Docklands, we will help you choose. We make window seats from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are a bay window that’s hard to furnish and wanting a seat without blocking the radiator.

Many homes around London Docklands have been built since 2000, and newer homes rarely come with much storage. Fitted storage can turn a hallway recess, a landing or the space under the stairs into somewhere useful. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on timber or metal studs, so the fixings are chosen for that.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Questions we’re often asked

My home in London Docklands is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Window seats are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Canary Wharf station?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is it possible to have a window seat above a radiator?

Yes. We build a grille or an open front into the seat so the heat is not trapped. We also leave space around the radiator. If you want the radiator moved, that’s work for your plumber.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How much does a window seat cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The shape of the window, the mix of drawers and lids, and any grille all play a part. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.

What is a window seat made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The frame and seat top are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the fronts and grilles are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Let us know about parking at the design visit
  • Decide if the seat is part of a larger piece
  • Tell us about the radiator before we visit
  • Consider how often you will reach for what’s stored

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the seat clean. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. The front edge picks up marks first.

Check now and then that hinges and handles are tight. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If a lid or drawer starts to catch, get in touch through our contact form and describe what’s happening.

How fitting works for window seats

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. You tell us about the window and the room, with a note of any radiator or shutters.
  2. We measure the window, the cill and any radiator or shutters. Then we talk through the seat height and storage.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows.
  4. The seat is made in our workshop and painted in your colour. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you. A radiator grille, if there is one, lets the heat through.

How to prepare

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance

How to get a quote

To make a start, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

For a straight window with no radiator, a ready-made bench can do the job. A bespoke seat earns its place where there is a bay, a radiator or a need for storage. We’re happy to give an honest view at the design visit. Separate ready-made pieces can make an open-plan room feel unplanned, whereas fitted furniture can define each part of the room.

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

If you live near Sir John McDougall Gardens, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. Near listed buildings like Church of St Matthias, under half a mile north of the centre of London Docklands, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the design visit.
