TV and media units in London Docklands

TV units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you prefer. We work across London, including London Docklands once the design and quote are agreed. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are nowhere good for speakers and equipment with nowhere proper to go.

In a home built since 2000, the aerial point and sockets are usually already fixed in place. A good number of homes around London Docklands went up since 2000, so TV and media units are typically designed around what’s already there. If you want an extra socket, that’s for your electrician, and we leave space and cable routes for it.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the TV unit designed for your room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Do you need TV and media units in London Docklands?

Upgrading to a bigger screen is a common trigger. The old stand looks too small, or the screen dominates the wall. A unit around it puts it in proportion.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room
  • A big screen that dominates the wall
  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste

Near listed buildings like Church of St Matthias, less than half a mile north of the centre of London Docklands, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Choosing a carpenter

  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

TV and media units for homes in London Docklands

Homes built since 2000 make up about 70% of the housing in the neighbourhood around London Docklands, with about 14% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of London Docklands, 15 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If you live in a period home close to St Peter's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. Living in a block of flats near Canary Wharf station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

London Docklands is about 2 miles west of Whitechapel, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. From period terraces to newer flats in London Docklands, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. In Tower Hamlets, London Docklands is one of the places we cover.

Postcode districts we cover here for TV and media units: E14, SE16 and E22. We cover homes on streets like Castor Lane, Cassilis Road and Dockyard Lane, for TV and media units and any of our other fitted furniture. Main roads around London Docklands include the A1206 and A1261. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the measuring visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. We also cover Canary Wharf (1 mile west), Poplar (1 mile north), Heron Quays (1 mile south-west), Coldharbour (1 mile east) and Blackwall (1 mile east). We also make TV and media units in nearby places such as Whitechapel (2 miles west), Spitalfields (3 miles west), Tower Hill (3 miles west), Bethnal Green (2 miles north-west), Cambridge Heath (3 miles north-west) and Stepney (2 miles north-west).

How fitting works for TV and media units

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so we protect the route before carrying anything in. Corners and door frames are covered as well. The sections are assembled in the room.

  1. You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
  2. We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.

How to prepare

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, use our contact form.

  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work
  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
  • Plastering or decorating around the unit

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How it works.

Questions from London Docklands

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in London Docklands?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

I live in a flat in London Docklands. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Before and after fitting day

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Note the screen size you have or plan to buy
  • Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
  • Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
  • Let us know about parking and access at the design visit

Use the access panels and cable routes when you add or change leads instead of making new ones. It keeps the unit tidy.

Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit, and don’t daisy-chain adaptors.

When is bespoke worth it?

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
