Poplar Window Seats
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on window seats in Poplar starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.
- A room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat
- Needing more storage in the room
- Unused space below a sash window

How we make window seats for Poplar
Some window seats are built in with shelves or cupboards around them. Shelving on each side, with the seat in the middle, makes a natural reading spot. The seat and the units around it are designed as one, so the lines and the finish match. It is worth talking through at the design visit in Poplar. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about needing more storage in the room and a room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat.
Many homes around Poplar were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are flats with compact layouts. Boilers, cylinders and consumer units often sit in a hall cupboard, and any new storage keeps their access and ventilation. Cupboards can be shallow where space is tight.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
How we price window seats
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- How big the furniture is
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It’s useful to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.
Getting in touch
What helps most when you first contact us:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

What else we make in Poplar
Before and after fitting day
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Think about whether you’d like shelves either side
- Choose a colour that suits the room
- Check whether there is a radiator under the window
- Note whether your window has working shutters
We open each lid and drawer with you before we go. If there’s a radiator grille, we make sure the radiator is clear and the grille is in place. That way, everything works as planned.
Lift lids gently and lower them carefully. That protects the hinges and the paint. Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly.
Common questions about window seats
Do you make window seats for homes in Poplar?
Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London, and Poplar is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Do you cover homes near Canary Wharf station?
Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.
Can you fit a window seat under a sash window?
Yes. The seat is set below the cill so the window can still open and close. If there are working shutters, we leave room for them to fold back. These details are measured when we visit.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.
Window seats in Poplar: local notes
About 66% of the homes in the streets around Poplar went up since 2000, and about 16% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for window seats, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Poplar include Church of St Matthias (Grade II*), under half a mile north, and New City College (Grade II), less than half a mile north. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. More than half of the homes in the streets around Poplar (about 66%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Newer homes often have little built-in storage, and their walls are normally plasterboard on studs, so the fixings for window seats are chosen for the board.
If your home is one of the older houses near St Peter's Church, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front. Close to Bartlett Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place. If your children go to Tower Hamlets College or a school nearby, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Materials and finishes
Lift-up lids
A lid can run the full width of the seat or be split into sections. Smaller lids are easier to open. We’ll talk through the options during the design visit.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Windows can run with condensation in winter, so a moisture-resistant grade of MDF makes sense. It takes a spray-painted or hand-painted finish well, and it stays stable once fitted.
How fitting day works
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so we protect the route before carrying anything in. Corners and door frames are covered as well. The sections are assembled in the room.
- You send us a note about the window and the seat you’d like.
- At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
- You receive a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
- We build the seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the finish you chose.
- We fit it in your home, and a hand-painted finish is applied in the room.
- Fresh paint takes a while to cure, so go gently with the seat and lids at first.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
